Marathon Might Not Hit its Planned 2025 Launch Target, Sentiment Around it is “Not Great” – Rumour

In yet another troubling episode, Bungie has recently announced the reduction of its workforce by 220 employees. This comes amid a series of setbacks that have led to project cancellations and a strategic scaling down of Destiny 2 plans. The future of the storied studio seems uncertain at best.
Despite these challenges, Bungie is reportedly working on a new PvPvE extraction shooter titled Marathon, which is currently projected for a 2025 launch. However, there are concerns that the game's development is not progressing as smoothly as hoped.
During a recent podcast episode hosted by YouTuber SkillUp, journalist Jason Schreier from Bloomberg shared insights into the state of Marathon. He indicated that the atmosphere around the project was not particularly optimistic, with sources expressing skepticism over whether it could meet its scheduled release.
Schreier pointed out that Marathon's initial plans had aimed for a release earlier this year but were postponed by a whole year. Conversations he’s had with industry insiders have left him uncertain if the game can hit its current 2025 deadline. He echoed this sentiment by noting that, based on discussions from a few months ago, there was a general lack of confidence regarding the project's timely completion.
Moreover, earlier this year, it was reported that Bungie had appointed Joe Ziegler, once a lead on Valorant, as the new game director for Marathon, replacing Christopher Barrett. Under Ziegler's guidance, the game has transitioned away from a focus on customizable characters and is now opting for a defined roster of playable heroes.
